Okumidori Ceremonial Matcha
Single-cultivar matcha from Uji, Kyoto

Okumidori is a celebrated Japanese matcha cultivar known for its vivid green colour, fresh aromatics, and lively expression. Grown in Uji, Kyoto — one of Japan’s most historic matcha-producing regions — this is a matcha prized for clarity, structure, and presence in the cup.

Often described as “ceremonial grade,” our Okumidori represents the highest quality of matcha traditionally prepared for whisking: vibrant, expressive, and deeply satisfying. While “ceremonial” is not a regulated or certified term, it is commonly used to describe matcha made from the finest leaves, with careful cultivation and processing, and a flavour profile well suited to being enjoyed on its own.

This is matcha with brightness and confidence — refined, focused, and unmistakably alive.

A brief lineage

Whisked tea preparation flourished in China during the Song Dynasty (10th–13th centuries), where powdered tea was valued for its texture, aroma, and meditative preparation. This practice was later introduced to Japan by Buddhist monks, where it became central to Japanese tea ceremony.

In Uji, near Kyoto, matcha production was further refined through careful shading, cultivar selection, and stone-milling. Over time, cultivars like Okumidori emerged — valued for their colour, aroma, and balance when prepared as whisked tea.

Okumidori reflects this lineage through its clarity, freshness, and ceremonial suitability.

Taste profile

Fresh, vibrant, and distinctly green. Expect notes of young spinach, sweet grass, and spring herbs, supported by a clean umami backbone and gentle natural sweetness. The texture is smooth and creamy, with a notable mineral character.

Bitterness is low but present enough to add structure, making Okumidori feel energetic rather than heavy.

This is a matcha that feels awake — expressive without being aggressive. We like to call it our grounding cultivar.

How to enjoy

Ceremonial matcha is traditionally enjoyed whisked simply with hot water, allowing its natural character to take the lead. This preparation highlights Okumidori’s colour, aroma, and fresh green profile.

Okumidori can also be enjoyed in lattes or modern preparations, especially when you want brightness and definition to carry through milk or light sweeteners. Many people enjoy tasting it plain first, then exploring how it behaves in different formats.

As always, there are no rules — only attention and curiosity.

A note from Teanuki

We see ceremonial matcha as both an anchor and an invitation — rooted in tradition, yet open to personal exploration. Okumidori offers a more vibrant expression of that idea: fresh, focused, and full of life.
